totally destroyed

Today in the One Year Bible, we read from Isaiah 39:1-41:16. Isaiah tells the king something that seems impossible. That in just a short time, everything the king owns will be carried off to Babylon. And we know it's true, because Babylon takes Israel into captivity in the following years.

Seems impossible today, too, right? The US is the most powerful country in the world. We have so many more battleships and aircraft carriers than any other country. Surely we're safe from being overcome, right?

But who knows what the future will bring. It's possible that everything could change in the blink of an eye. How can we possibly prepare for a change that huge? In one way, we can't. There's no way to predict how things might change or what life will be like if it does.

But in another way, we will keep on loving God and other people. We will continue to pray for those we love, and for our enemies, too. We can keep on offering our suffering to God, asking Him to use it for the redemption of the world. (see Colossians 1:24 for more on that)

So let's pray that God protect our nation and those we love. But let's also be ready for anything, and make sure we have the habits in place that will sustain us if things change.

God, thanks for being the same yesterday, today, and forever.
