how to make friends

Today in the One Year Bible we read from 1 Samuel 20:1-21:15. We read about one of the most famous friendships of all time: David and Jonathan. They worked together to keep David alive even though Saul was trying very hard to kill him.

This brings up some really great advice that I heard once. Of course, you've probably heard that to have friends, you should BE a friend. Which means what? Being nice to people, remembering important things about them like their favorite drink or their birthday, and rooting for them against whatever they face each day. Being "on their team", right?

You know what else that's called? Loving them.

So basically, if we love people the way God tells us to... which means love EVERYONE, even our enemies... then we will have lots of friends!

It's not all roses, though, because sometimes loving people means telling them the truth, and some people CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH. But Jack Nicholson aside, you WILL make lots of friends by loving people like God tells us to.

God, thanks for teaching us to love people... and giving us the fringe benefit of making friends that way.
