finding a spouse today and back then

Today in the One Year Bible, we read from Judges 21:1-Ruth 1:22. We read two stories of marriage: one very dark and sad, and the other very bright and joyful.

One whole tribe of Israel is lacking wives, so the other tribes go and kill everyone in this one town and take all their virgins and give them to the tribe that's missing wives. I'm sure that was happy and pleasant for everyone, right? Very dark moment in OT history.

But then we turn the corner. Ruth is a great picture of love and fidelity. First, in today's reading, Ruth pledges to Naomi that she will go with her, even though the going might be hard. This is a beautiful moment of love and dedication. Tomorrow we'll read how it progresses.

But as for now, say a prayer for those who are looking for their spouse. That it'll be more like Ruth, and less like the virgins taken from their town and given to the men of Dan.

God, thanks for working good out of our circumstances, even the dark ones. And thank you for love and joy.
