life is like a rental car

Today we read from Joshua 7:16-9:2 in the One Year Bible. We see that this guy named Achan made a bad decision, and took a robe that didn't belong to him. This decision resulted in him and his family being stoned to death.

That escalated quickly, didn't it?

But it drives home (pun intended) the lesson today: that we should treat life like a rental car.

See... when you rent a car, it KIND OF belongs to you, but only for a short time. You take care of it, and drive it to and from where you need to go. And then you turn it in and never see it again.

That's how our whole lives our, when we stop and think about it. God gives us our bodies, and our friends and families, and our possessions... and we "own" them for a few years. But then, in the blink of an eye, it's time to turn them all in again. What did we do with them, in the short few years that we had them? Did we do some good?

Let's not throw away everything for a stupid robe.

Or whatever it is that might try to take your time and attention away from God and the people in your life that you should love. Put them first. And then all the other rentals will fall into place.

God, thanks for teaching us eternal truths from temporary rentals.
