be like Joshua
Today we read the end of Deuteronomy (and therefore the end of the Pentateuch, or the first five books of the Bible, traditionally believed to have been written by Moses) in Deut. 34:1-12, and then we begin the book of Joshua, with Joshua 1:1-2:24.
God gives Joshua some powerful commands, and Joshua (unlike so many other members of the OT story) does what He says to do! He tells him to be strong and courageous, and to go conquer the promised land. And Joshua gives commands to his people, and they go and take the land.
He gives us those commands, too. To be strong and courageous. He tells us over and over and over not to be afraid. To go and do what He's called us to go. Only this time, He's calling us to do something that's not quite as hard. We aren't called to go kill giants. We're called to love our enemies. And we can do that just as fearlessly as Joshua did.
Be strong and very courageous!
God, thanks for calling us to live without fear. Help us to love our enemies.
