the wisdom that comes with age
Today in the One Year Bible, Paul gives us some good advice in Titus 2:1-15. He says that older men should exercise self control, be worthy of respect, and live wisely.
As we grow older, we realize that there is a certain kind of wisdom that comes with age. Not everyone who is old is wise, as some people never learn. And some young people are "wise beyond their years." But as a rule, the older we get, the more we realize certain things about life.
For instance, we learn to wait and watch. Young people usually rush into a situation and speak before they listen. They're quick to pass judgment on other people, and rash in making their decisions quickly - often before they have all the facts.
As we get older, we learn to wait for more information before we decide. We are more forgiving of people's mistakes, and we see more of the big picture, which allows us to be patient with those who do wrong, and try to help them become better people rather than just writing them off as a lost cause.
When we look at those characteristics of being a wise person, we see that they are all things that God does in His relationship with us.
As we add years to our lives, let's be sure to become more like Him.
God, thanks for teaching us wisdom.
