what God does with curses
Today in the One Year Bible, we read from Galatians 3:10-22. Paul says that Jesus took our curse upon Himself when He died on the cross, because the Bible says that "cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree." And that raises some interesting questions, because Peter and some of the other disciples were also "hung on a tree." Were they also cursed? What about the Christian martyrs in Japan who were hung on crosses until the tide came in and drowned them? Were they cursed?
The answer to these and many other questions lies in what God does to things when He comes into contact with them. For example: why was Jesus baptized? Don't we get baptized to take away our sins? But Jesus HAD no sins, so why would He need to be baptized?
Well, as Pope Emeritus Benedict XIV points out in his wonderful book "Jesus of Nazareth", Jesus baptized baptism when He was baptized. He turned it into something new.
And that's what He did to the cross, too. No longer were people cursed who were "hung on a tree." Instead, they shared in the glory and the blessing of being a martyr - and entering into a wonderful company in heaven of those with white robes.
He does that with your life, too. When He touches you, He takes away your curses and turns them all into blessings. He baptizes your appetites and emotions. He transforms you into a new creation. And that's not just a one time thing. He does it over and over, every day.
Just ask.
God, thanks for making all things new.
