look on my works

Today in the One Year Bible, we read from 1 Corinthians 2:6-3:4. Paul tells us that the wisdom of the world will only last briefly. And that's good advice to keep in mind.

I'm reminded of the poem Ozymandias. The mighty king has a sculpture made and inscribes the base with a poem about how great he is. He says, "Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!" But only the legs of the statue are left, and the rest of Ozymandias and his kingdom are long gone and forgotten.

So it will be with the "powers" we see in the world today. In fact, things change pretty fast these days. You might not even have to wait very long before the government or dictator that is boasting his power might be gone.

Not so with the kingdom of God. Jesus told us in no uncertain terms that His church will never be destroyed. So no matter how dire things get, or how determined some leader is to destroy the church - it's just not possible. They destroy themselves in the effort.

So where will you put your trust? In the kingdoms that are here today and gone tomorrow? Or in the church that will be here until the end of time?

God, thanks for teaching us where to put our trust.
