listen to Him

Today in the One Year Bible, we read from Luke 9:28-50. Jesus goes to the mount of transfiguration, and God very clearly tells the disciples, "This is my Son. Listen to Him."

The very last thing that Mary is recorded saying in the Bible is, "Do whatever He tells you."

Very clearly, we should do what Jesus says, right? God Himself, the Father, commanded us to listen to Him. So it's important for us to know what He said and to do it.

What did He say to do? Love God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength. And love other people the way you love yourself. Forgive your enemies, love them, and pray for them. Do to other people the things you want done to you. Above all else: love.

So maybe we should take those things seriously, right? Love everyone, even ISIS, even those on the other side of the political aisle, even the president or the woman who was almost president, whichever is harder for you (or both, actually!) Pray for them. Genuinely wish their good.

It's not optional. God Himself told us to do what Jesus said. And Jesus made it very clear. Love everyone.

Now, it's not easy. So we need help. Ask God to help you, and He'll put so much love in your heart that it will overflow to love everyone. This doesn't mean you'll necessarily LIKE these people. But you will forgive them, care about them, and will their good.

God, please help us to do what you command - to love everyone.
