we know not what we do
Today in the One Year Bible, we read from Mark 16:1-20. The faithful women, Mary, Mary, and Salome go to the tomb to anoint Jesus's body for burial. They don't know what's going to happen. As far as they understand, Jesus, their hope and Messiah, was defeated and killed. But in their faithfulness and love, they take care of His body anyway.
At church this week, the pastor said something I'd never thought of before. In the story of the people who "did unto the least of these" and went to reward, and those who did NOT do unto the least of these, and went to punishment, NEITHER GROUP understood what they were doing. The group that visited Jesus in prison and fed Him and clothed Him asked, "Lord, when did we do these things?" and the other group asked, "When did we NOT do these things?"
Jesus talks about the idea of not understanding what you do, when He says not to let your right hand know what your left hand is doing. It's better when we do good for the kingdom of God and DON'T realize the great thing that we're doing. It keeps us humble. It preserves our reward for heaven.
So the take away lesson is... just love people. Don't worry about who gets credit. Don't worry about why you're doing it. Don't try to make a lesson out of everything. Just love. That's one thing that St Therese of Liseux taught us. Don't make it over complicated. Just love.
God, thanks for making it so simple for us. Help us to just love.
