Jesus prayed

Today in the One Year Bible, we read from Mark 14:22-52. We read about the Last Supper, and about the disciples vowing never to let Him down. And then they sing a hymn and go out to the mountain. Jesus knows what's coming. And so He prays.

Besides being a powerful part of His passion, it's also a great example for all of us. When we face life's difficulties (and it's doubtful any of us will ever face anything as difficult as He did), and our courage threatens to shrivel, and our breathing comes hard, and our heart starts beating fast... that's the time to pray.

Of course, we should pray without ceasing. We should pray about everything. But it's especially crucial that we pray in times of crisis. That we let Him know what we're experiencing... but more than that, let Him know that He is the one in whom we ultimately hope. When it comes down to the final reckoning... He is who we trust.

When we do that - He'll never let us down.

Does that mean we won't die? Well, maybe not yet. We'll all die eventually. But what comes after that is what's most important, and we see that in Jesus's perfect example, as well.

God, thanks for teaching us to pray.
