a hard message to believe
Today in the One Year Bible, we read from Luke 1:1-25. The angel Gabriel comes to Zechariah and tells him that he and his wife are going to have a child in their old age. Zechariah finds this hard to believe since he and his wife are both past the child bearing years. And for this lack of belief, Zechariah is punished with being mute until he names his son John.
On one hand, if an angel appeared before you, that might give you reason to believe what they're telling you. On the other hand, if your experience is that NO ONE EVER has children past a certain age, then you might have trouble believing even an angel who tells you otherwise.
Which do you strengthen each day? Your faith or your doubt? If you read the Bible on a regular basis, and stories of the saints from throughout history, then when it comes time to believe what God tells you, you'll have to faith to do so.
But if you feed your doubt every day, often by reading the news that tells us of all the evil and hate and fear in the world, then when the message comes, you'll be afraid.
It's a daily decision. Which will you feed today?
God, thanks for teaching us how to grow our faith. We believe - help our unbelief.
