only if God helps you
Today in the One Year Bible, we read from Matthew 18:21-19:12. Jesus tells His disciples something very unusual.
He says that not everyone will be able to accept or understand what He's about to tell them, but only those who God helps to "get it." He says that some of us are not meant for marriage, but are called to be single "for the Kingdom of God."
Now, it's important to point out that He JUST told us how God intended us to BE married just a couple verses back. God created marriage, and it's a good thing. He made men and women, and created sex so we could create more men and women. That's what He wants. That was our first great commission. Be fruitful and multiply!
But now He's telling us that not all of us are called to do that. Some of us, those God enables, are called to be single for life. For the Kingdom of God. That means alot of different things. Some are called to be nuns or priests, and live single lives serving Him in the church. Some are called to just be single all of their lives. They don't WANT to get married... they're happy living their single lives. God has enabled them to be content living with Him alone.
So it's good for us to realize that not everyone has to be like us, right? Just because I'm called to be married doesn't mean you should. Just because my brother is called to be a priest doesn't mean I am. God calls each of us to do what He enables us to do.
God, thanks for calling each of us to something. Please help us find it.
