Today in the One Year Bible, we read from 2 Timothy 2:22-3:17. Paul gives Timothy some advice that works really well on FB. He says to answer everyone kindly, and be patient when explaining the truth to people.
I'm in several groups on FB, which is a good way to meet new people and to learn new things. I really enjoy getting to know people in the Eastern Orthodox Church, who have a theology VERY similar to mine, but with enough little differences to keep it interesting.
And many times there are people in these groups who are interested in learning more about my church. They ask questions, and sometimes the questions are a little accusatory and pointed. But I've noticed that when I take the time to answer them, kindly and patiently, and especially when I throw in a little humor, they are very likely to respond to my replies in a like manner.
It's almost frustrating sometimes, because I'll be arguing with someone, and I use the kind and patient tone that I've learned through countless interactions online, and after awhile, the person I'm talking to starts liking my comments and then sends me a friend request. This is frustrating because sometimes I just want a good argument! :)
But if we heed Paul's advice, we'll find that all of our relationships will improve.
God, thank You for giving us good advice in dealing with people on social media - and IRL.
