who gets the benefit of the doubt
Today in the One Year Bible, we read from 1 Corinthians 4:1-21. Paul says not to judge anyone based on what they see now, but let everyone have a chance to do what they're going to do, and let God judge them once all the deeds are done.
And that's good advice, right? One problem that we see in life is that people tend to give themselves the benefit of the doubt, but hold other people accountable for the sins that they see them falling into. When the best course of action is the opposite. The sins we should be most concerned with are our own, and we should give everyone else the benefit of the doubt.
Not only is this good spiritual advice, it actually makes us happier, too. Because if you give others the benefit of the doubt, it usually means that you lower your expectations for their behavior. If your expectations are low, then when people do good, you're pleasantly surprised. If they act like scoundrels... well, that's what you expected, after all.
God, thank You for teaching us to mind our own sins, and give everyone else a break.
