playing favorites

Today in the One Year Bible, we read from Romans 2: 1-24. We hear from Paul, who tells us that God doesn't play favorites - He gives everyone a chance to do good with their lives, and if they don't, then everyone faces judgment. That includes people who hear about the gospel and people who don't. He is patient with all of us, giving us a chance to repent of our sins and do good with our lives.

That's good advice for us, too, isn't it? Since God gives us all a chance, we should do the same for others. Be patient with them, and let them have time to repent and do good with their lives. We shouldn't judge them, but pray for them and hope they make good use of the time they have to make the world a better place.

And we should apply this thinking to ourselves, too. Be patient with out own failings, and remember that we can always repent of our mistakes and our disobedience, and learn to do good with our lives. If God is patient with you, shouldn't you be patient with yourself? You're going to fail - that's part of what it means to be human. Just get up and try again - and make the world a better place.

God, thank You for being patient with us. Please help us to make our lives into something worth waiting for.
