what's worth dying for
Today in the One Year Bible, we read from Acts 20:1-38. We read about Paul going on and on in his preaching until a young man falls asleep, falling out a window and down three stories to his death. But Paul does bring him back to life again.
But Paul says a little later that he feels that God has been telling him that he faces jail and death in the near future. He says that he knows he'll die soon, but that sharing the good news of Jesus with everyone was so important to him that he would keep on doing it, even though it meant giving his life for it.
That's what life is about, isn't it? Finding what is so important to you that it's worth giving your life for... and then living for it. For Paul, it was sharing the gospel. Your calling probably involves the good news of Jesus, too, but it probably doesn't mean sailing all over the Mediterranean telling Jews about the faith, like Paul did. Your calling is to go where He's sending you, and talk to those who need to hear your words. To love those in your life who need love. To be kind to the people you see throughout your day. These are the things WE are called to do. And they are worth dying for.
Let's keep that perspective in front of us throughout the day, so we'll have the energy and focus to do His will when the time comes. And comes again. And again, all throughout our day.
God, thank You for calling us to something worth dying for. Help us live for it.
