ecce homo
Jesus is held up to ridicule and scorn on our behalf in today's reading from the One Year Bible. We read from John 18:25-19:22. Pilate brings Jesus out to the crowd and says, "Ecce homo!" Which is Latin for "Behold the man!"
And we should behold Him. He's not there by accident. Every step of the way was chosen by Him. He was born in a stable in Bethlehem on purpose. He led a life of obscurity for 30 years on purpose. He performed miracles to prove who He was on purpose. He died on the cross and defeated sin and death and rose again from the grave - on purpose.
The purpose we find when we "ecce homo", when we behold the man, is us. We are His purpose. He came to save us. To show us what love looks like. And to put that love in our cold, empty hearts.
So today, ecce homo. Behold the man. And see the love that He pours out for you.
God, thank You for all of the steps You took to bring us home to You.
