when the truth is bigger than the facts
Today in our readings from the NT we find out that truth is bigger than facts. The reading is from Mark 5:21-43.
Jesus is on his way to heal Jairus's daughter. And while He traveled, word came that the child had died. But Jesus surprises Jairus by teaching him that truth is bigger than facts.
The fact was, the man's daughter had in fact died. The fact was, dead people stay dead. The Bible even tells us this fact: it is appointed to men to die once, and after that, the judgment.
But the truth is bigger than the facts. And the truth in this case was that God can do anything. God decided, in this case, to wake the child from her sleep - to bring her back from the dead.
And there is a profound truth for us to learn here, too. Because the fact that stares us in the face is a cold, sad, and horrible fact. We are all going to die. We don't know when or how, but we do know it will happen. That's the fact.
But the truth is bigger than the fact for us, too. Because Jesus will do the same thing for us that He did for that little girl. He will wake us from our sleep - which is all that our death really is, when we look at it in the light of Truth.
God, please help us take Your advice, given in the gospel today: "Don't be afraid. Just have faith."
