remembering who God is
Today Jesus reminds us of something very important in our reading from the One Year Bible. The reading today is Mark 6:30-56. In it, Jesus tells His disciples to feed 5000 people. They have no idea how they can do that. Then Jesus miraculously multiplies the few bread loaves and fish they have, and feed all of them.
There are many reasons Jesus did this, including proclaiming the kingdom of God, and setting the stage for teachings on the Eucharist. But one big thing that this story does is remind us that God provides for our needs. Not in some watchmaker kind of way, where He set things in motion and then let it go. St Thomas Aquinas teaches us that God is continually sustaining us - every moment of every day. And He DOES want us to feed His people. He told Peter very clearly to do this. The way we express our love for Him is by taking care of His people.
And when we step out and do that, even when we don't know how we're going to do it, He is faithful to take care of us, and to provide what we need to feed His children. He's amazing that way.
God, thank You for giving us what we need to love You.
