don't go looking for Him
Today's reading from the One Year Bible tells us about an eye for an eye in the OT reading, which you can listen to by CLICKING HERE. The New Testament reading is Jesus telling us not to get caught up in when the end times will come, which you can LISTEN TO HERE.
And that's where I think we can land today. Why do we want to know WHEN? Well, I think it's a matter of control. That's why we like looking at schedules. That's why we plan things in advance. That's why we go to fortune tellers and sorcerers. In fact, our reading today from the OT tells us that all sorcerers must be put to death! But we seek out these things because they give us a feeling of control. We don't like being vulnerable. And we don't like having to trust God. We prefer to KNOW what's going to happen, and to know WHEN it's going to happen.
So the disciples asked Jesus when all of the end times stuff was going to happen. And He doesn't really tell them when. He just tells them not to try to figure it out. Lots of things are going to happen, He says, before the end times come.
The takeaway lesson, then, is to trust God. Know that He will work things out. He loves us, and He can be trusted to work things out for the best. We don't need to know what comes tomorrow, because we know Who will be there waiting for us.
God, thanks for helping us learn to trust You and not worry about tomorrow.
