St John Chrysostom tells us today bout walking on the sacred ground of Scripture in A Year with the Church Fathers. He does a great job painting a picture of the holy ground we tread on when we visit Scripture.
It's easy to become inured to the power and majesty of the Bible. It's easy to fall into one of two erros regarding it... neglecting it due to being too busy in our lives, or reading it so often that it become common and banal to us. It's important that we step back from time to time and realize what an amazing privilege we're given in being able to pick up a book that was written over the course of hundreds of years by over a dozen authors, collected through the wisdom of the church.
We know that God speaks to us in various ways. Through our conscience, through the wise counsel of friends. But probably the chief way in which He speaks into our lives is through the Bible. Jesus said that His sheep recognize His voice. And we can tune our ears to His voice by spending time with the words that we know are from Him. That way when He speaks to us in other ways, we'll recognize it.
Do you have a plan for spending time in His words to us? The One Year Bible is a great way to do this. It will take you through the Bible in an interesting way. Next year, I plan to go through the One Year Bible again with you guys, only this time I"ll be recording the reading each day on YouTube, so you can listen to it while exercising or driving or whatever else you do during the day when you can put your earbuds in and soak in God's words for your day.
In the meantime, let's try to spend some time with Him in His words.
God, thank You for speaking to our lives through Your sacred scripture.
