Thomas Keating tells us about opening ourselves up to God today in The Daily Reader for Contemplative Living.
He tells us to open ourselves up to who God is. And, in a way, this is another way of saying "Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done," isn't it? We're asking God to manifest His will in our lives. AND, we're recognizing all of the ways that His will is already manifesting in our lives. Because even though our minds tend to fixate on the things that are wrong, even in the worst situations there is always SO MUCH that God has done for us that we can be thankful for.
So this centering prayer that Keating is encouraging us to do is a matter of opening our lives and our minds to the work that God is already doing all around us, and in us to the extent that we are not resisting Him. It is lowering our defenses and letting Him have full control of our lives. And when we do that, we find doors opening, prayers being answered, and even our desires being changed... conformed to His desires for our lives, which is always what is best for us and what satisfies us on the deepest level. He knows us far better than we know ourselves, so when we conform our wills to His, we find our deepest fulfillment.
God, may Your will be done in my life as it is in Heaven.
