Lewis talks about the fantastic creation of free will today in A Year with C.S. Lewis.
He points out that one of God's greatest and most astonishing creations is the ability for man to reject Him. And that seems counter intuitive. But when you think about it, it really is amazing that He has created beings who can truly accept or reject Him and are not forced to do either.
It is a great and terrible responsibility that has been given to us. The freedom to choose. Of course, Lewis means the Ultimate Choice - where we spend eternity. But the choice is actually put to us every day, isn't it? Will I choose my own selfish desires today, or will I choose to do what He wants me to? Every day we can make our lives a little more like Jesus, or we can take a tiny step away from Him. And He doesn't force us in that decision, either.
As Lewis points out, when we submit to His will and seek out what He wants us to do in our daily lives, we paradoxically find ourselves freer. When we selfishly demand our own way and make our own will the priority of our day, we find ourselves enslaved to our desires.
Which do you choose today?
God, thank You for the great and terrible choice. Please give us wisdom in choosing.
