Lewis tells us what turning the other cheek does NOT mean today in A Year with C.S. Lewis.
He gives us various scenarios in which we should resist the evil man. Times when we should NOT turn the other cheek. And that brings up the relationship between reason and faith.
As the verse in the picture above indicates, God is calling us to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. Notice, that does not say we're to be transformed by the removal of our minds, or the deleting of our minds. Faith doesn't mean throwing our common sense out the window. It means allowing our relationship with Jesus to transform our sense. To complete it. To raise it above the level where it started. God is calling us to allow Him to make our understanding fuller, not less.
So when we see someone hurting an innocent, we don't say "Well, Jesus said not to resist an evil man, so I guess I just have to sit here while he hurts that person." That's not what Jesus meant. Sometimes following Jesus means resisting evil men. We're called to wisdom, which tells us when to take His statements as literally applying to our lives, and when to realize that our situation isn't applicable to what we remember Him saying.
God, You said if we lack wisdom, we can ask, and You will give it to us. Please make us wise.
