Lewis tells us today about God working both inside and outside of us in A Year with C.S. Lewis.
And the pic above humorously illustrates a profound truth. It DOES explain so many things when we realize that God is not just working around us, but trying (with varying levels of success) to work inside of us as well, throughout our lives. We can thwart His work, or we can cooperate and help it. It's our decision.
Sometimes we think that we should resist His will because it will be something we don't like or are afraid of. And His will DOES push us out of the place where we're comfortable, that's for sure. Like St. Augustine said, "God, please make me chaste, but not just yet." He wanted to have some "fun" first.
But this is a misunderstanding. When we really learn what God is up to... what He wants to happen in our lives... we will cooperate with all of our strength. We'll see that His plan for us is what brings us greatest joy and satisfaction. It's like a little child thinking that they want to eat ten pounds of chocolate, and don't realize that a healthy, delicious meal is being served in an hour. In their foolishness, they would make themselves miserable AND miss out on the good, healthy, nutritious meal. But if they trust the wisdom of their parent, they'll listen... and they won't miss out.
So it is with us. If we trust in His wisdom, we'll find ourselves going places, doing things, loving people... that we never would have done before. We find ourselves with transformed lives... when we let Him "will and do according to His good purpose."
God, thank You for being there in all Your wisdom, so we can trust You to bring us into the best lives.
