Lewis tells us that God's goal for us is perfection today in A Year with C.S. Lewis.
And he's right, of course. The way he says it, though, almost sounds like a threat. :) Of COURSE God wants us to be perfect. What else would He want? What else would WE want? To go through eternity only half done? To suffer from embarrassing and debilitating shortcomings forever? No. God wants to bring us to perfection. And that is, when we really think about it, what we want, too.
But I think we can take most of the "threat" out of it. God isn't shaking His fist at us, saying "I'm going to make you perfect whether you like it or not! And you're not going to like it!" which is the theme that Lewis seems to be taking.
Yes, being purified hurts sometimes. Yes, it takes everything we've got to become the person that He is creating us to be. But once we see the big picture, and once we understand what it means, we will agree with Him 100% that this is what should happen. That what we really want is to be like Him.
And His love, His grace, His mercy, His kindness are with us all along the way. He is gently guiding us with His yoke which is easy. He is helping us carry every burden, which is why His is light. We don't have to be afraid. He tells us not to. He says that we should love Him with all of our being. And that our love casts out fear.
So let's embrace this change. Let's ASK Him to make these changes, and cooperate with Him while He's doing it.
After all, He's doing exactly what we really WANT Him to do, when all is said and done.
God, thanks for making us perfect, and for doing it gently and kindly so we can trust You with the steps.
