Lewis tells us that we should not shrink back from what God is making us, today in A Year with C.S. Lewis.
He says that we are called to be saints. Pulling back from that calling, he says, is not humility... accepting that calling is obedience. And that would be scary (and it IS a little scary) if it weren't for the great cloud of witnesses that we can look to for inspiration and example.
The pic above is of the tapestry in the Los Angeles cathedral. It is a wonderful representation of the saints, throughout time, standing side by side and watching the sacrifice of the Eucharist. It's one of my favorite pieces of art in the world.
And those saints were wonderful people. They were very human, just like me and you. They had weaknesses and sins. They had hopes and dreams, some of which they experienced in this life, some of which they experienced in full in the next life.
When we read their lives (which I highly recommend), we see how God shaped them into amazing, loving, kind, and very cool human beings. The same way He wants to shape US into the best version of ourselves.
Let's not only look to the great cloud of witnesses that surround us, but ask for their prayers as He makes us more like them.
God, thanks for great examples.
