Today's readings: 2 Chron 29:1-36, Rom 14:1-23, Psalm 24:1-10, Proverbs 20:12
Paul talks to us today about matters of conscience. Seems that the disputes we have today about what the correct moral decision about given subjects isn't something we invented with Facebook. :) They were arguing about eating meat back in Paul's day. And he said that there are two things you should always keep in mind in these situations.
One, always follow your conscience. An old Polish proverb says "Conscience is the voice of the soul." And Paul says in no uncertain words that we should never violate our conscience. This makes sense when you think about it, because God speaks to us in our hearts. And the way He speaks to me isn't always the same as the way He speaks to you. I should obey what He tells me in my life. But that should, of course, always be tempered by...
Two - we should act in love. If someone's conscience is bothering them, don't do the thing that bothers them when they're around. Be kind. Act in love. Think about how your freedoms affect others. These are ALL good things for us to remember today, when we find ourselves with many freedoms, but on a planet that grows smaller every day due to the ubiquity of technology. Did you hear that Sri Lanka will soon have universal internet access? They're flying balloons over Sri Lanka to provide internet connections to everyone on the resplendent island (that's what Sri Lanka means).
So we're getting more and more connected. Which means we need to be more and more kind, patient, loving, and gentle with one another. It's the grease that makes things go smoothly.
God, please help me love your children who are now closer than ever.
