The Nations Rage: One Year Bible Reading for July 4

Today we read from these verses in the One Year Bible:

2 Kings 23:31-25:30
Acts 22:17-23:10
Psalm 2:1-12
Proverbs 18:13

And the chapter from Psalms is very appropriate today! Today the United States celebrates its founding. And all thinking people know that the US is a mixed bag when it comes to good or evil. Yes, we have accomplished many great things and we stand for freedom. Yes, it's also true that the US has done many evil things to get to where we are today. But I'm not here to bash the US on this day of celebration.

I'm just here to remind everyone that we Christians have a citizenship that predates and transcends being Americans (if in fact you ARE an American). The nations, including the US, make their plans. And according to today's readings, the Lord in Heaven laughs at their plans. That's not to say we shouldn't plan, or that we shouldn't take a country's plans seriously. But we SHOULD remember that God alone knows what will happen tomorrow, let alone a hundred years from now.

We humans make our plans, but God is in charge of what actually happens. Roe V Wade is an example.

God, thanks for being bigger than nations - and for being Someone we can trust.
