Why We Should Be Kind: One Year Bible Reading for March 19

Today in the One Year Bible, we read these verses:

Numbers 26:52-28:15
Luke 3:1-22
Psalm 61:1-8
Proverbs 11:16-17

Let's look at Proverbs. The writer tells us that we have a vested reason to be kind instead of cruel. "Those who are kind benefit THEMSELVES, but the cruel bring ruin on THEMSELVES." (Emphasis mine, of course.)

And when you think about it logically, it makes sense. When you go around being cruel to people, or to animals, or even to your inanimate objects, you are planting seeds. And those seeds grow up to be unpleasant things: angry people, pets who don't trust you and might run away or bite you, and broken objects.

But if you are kind to everyone and everything, you're investing in a good future. You create relationships with people and animals that foster trust and love. You reap a very healthy and positive harvest from sowing THOSE seeds.

Which seeds will you plant today?

God, thanks for teaching us that it benefits US to be kind.
