St Cyprian: How to Deal with Those Who Deny Jesus

Today we read about St Cyprian, who was the first Bishop from Carthage to be martyred. He was bishop during a severe plague, and won over many hearts by his kindness and tender care of those suffering from the plague. He also made many enemies by his treatment of those who denied Jesus under the persecution from Emperor Valerius. Some other priests were too indulgent and acted like it was no big deal that these Christians denied their faith. Other priests refused to absolve those who repented and came back after denying Jesus. Cyprian found that middle ground, the balanced and wise road that made it clear denying Jesus was a mortal and serious sin, but that forgiveness was available for those who repented. You can read more about him here.

In what areas do we need to find that wise middle ground today? Are there those that rush to extremes on these issues, who need our tenderness and kindness to bring them around?

God, thanks for teaching us through this wise Bishop. St Cyprian, pray for us.
