Today we read about St Turibius de Mogrovejo in the book In Caelo et in Terra. He was from a wealthy family in Spain, and became a judge. The king heard about his virtue and how he judged fairly because of his faith. He wanted to appoint him bishop of Lima, Peru.
But Turibius wasn't even a priest. The king asked the Pope, and they ordained Turibius as a priest, then made him bishop of Lima.
Turibius felt very unworthy of this promotion. And he was! But God used him, and he did a great deal of good in his diocese before he fell ill and died. You can read more about him here.
You will feel unworthy too, when God calls you to do something. But God won't call you to do it without enabling you to do it. That doesn't mean you'll be GREAT at it though! Like GK Chesterton said, "If something is worth doing, it's worth doing badly." God doesn't always call us to excel and to be great at things. Sometimes He just calls us to do it, even if it looks terrible and seems amateurish. It's OK - He asks for obedience, not amazing success.
God, thanks for teaching us humility through your humble servant Turibius. St Turibius de Mogrovejo, pray for us.
