rich people in heaven

Today we read something profound in the One Year Bible selection from Luke 18:18-43. Jesus tells His disciples that it's very difficult - pretty much impossible - for rich people to go to heaven. And when He says this, it should concern us, because He's talking about us. We are the rich people. I know you probably don't feel rich... you think of Bill Gates or maybe David Beckham when you think of rich people. But you are more than likely in the top 1% of wealthiest people in the world. See my previous blogs for the link that shows this. (If you make more than $32,000 a year, you're in the top 1% of the world.)

So how alarmed should we be? Well, Jesus tells us that those of us who are well off should sell all that we have and give the money to the poor, and come follow Him. Notice, He doesn't just say give it away... He says that giving it away will get you treasure in heaven. You're not getting rid of bad things - you're investing good things in something better.

Therefore we should consider giving of our wealth to those who need it. We NEED to be more generous with what He's given us.

But don't despair. With God all things are possible. Even your salvation - and mine.

God, thanks for making all things possible. Help us to be generous with our stuff.
