taste and see

Today we read from John 7:31-53 in the One Year Bible. It's quite a passage. The religious leaders are almost all opposing Jesus because they think they know that He's from Galilee. They have read that the Messiah will actually come from the line of David, in Bethlehem. What they don't realize, of course, is that Jesus DOES come from the line of David in Bethlehem.

So they ignore all of the miracles and wonders that He is doing. They accuse Him of being full of the devil, because even though He's doing amazing things, He can't be who He claims to be. Because they're sure He's not from Bethlehem.

If only they would taste and see. If they had laid aside their preconceived notions about Jesus and the Messiah, and listened to His words, tasted His miracle bread, drank His living water, and seen all of the miraculous healings He performed every day for years.... if they would only taste and see, they would be saved.

Let's learn from their mistakes, shall we? Let's lay aside our preconceived notions of how life works. Let's taste and see that the Lord is good. Let's trust in His miracles. Let's follow Him, even when we think we know where we come from, and where we're going. Let's let Him show us what life really looks like.

God, thank You for helping us to set aside our notions, and taste and see how good You are.
