does the devil make us do it?
St John Cassian talks to us today about who is responsible for our sins in A Year with the Church Fathers. He says that no one can ever make us sin except us. We can't blame anyone else, not even the devil. No one has control over our sin besides us.
That's one of the most important steps towards getting our minds and hearts straight with God. As long as we keep blaming other people, we can't really receive the forgiveness that we need to heal. We have to squarely face that we're responsible for our sins. Once we own up to them, He has all the grace in the world for us.
There ARE mitigating factors in our culpability, though. Being tired, being sick, being influenced by others, not understanding the seriousness of the sin... all of these things affect how guilty we are for our sin. But we should always be the one to blame ourselves squarely, and let Him apply the grace and the mercy.
God, please give us the strength to face our sin.
