strengthening our resolve

St Origen talks to us about resisting temptation today in A Year with the Church Fathers. He says that we can strengthen our "muscles" to resist sin, just like we strengthen our muscles to be able to fight off evil men.

It's a version of the "dog you feed" metaphor. If one dog is our holiness and the other dog is our sin, the more we feed one the bigger it will get. Eventually, if we keep feeding one and starving the other, we'll be left with only one dog.

Which dog do you choose?

God, please help us strengthen our spiritual muscles, and resist sin for the purpose of being closer to You.
