St Clement of Alexandria talks to us today about how to think about food in A Year with the Church Fathers. He says that we should see food indifferently. We should give thanks for what God has given us, but enjoy our food in moderation. He said we should be thankful for everything, that thanksgiving is our best food. So we should express our thanksgiving with every meal, every day.
I'm reminded of this mentality every time I rent a car. Some friends and I went to a concert in Nashville this weekend, and we rented a car for the trip. It wasn't a fantastic car, but it was fine. It got us where we were going, and when we got home, we returned it and will never see it again. That's probably a good way to think of all of my possessions. God has given me good things, and I'm grateful for them. But one day, I'll get home, and I'll turn in all of the things He's given me.
I shouldn't get too attached.
Thank You, God, for teachings us to be thankful through saints and rental cars.
