Today in A Year with the Church Fathers, St Ambrose talks to us about investing in such a way that we reap the rewards forever.
He says that when we give to the poor, our donations make up their possessions. That was something I'd never thought of. For the extremely poor, what you give them might be everything they own. Something to think about.
But he also says that when we spend our money on things here in this life, we will eventually lose what we paid for. But when we give to the poor, we are investing in eternity.
Now, Jesus made it pretty clear that we would be rewarded for helping "the least of these", and that a dire fate awaited those who don't. But even with that truth set aside for a moment, it only makes sense that helping the poor will be an investment that lasts forever. Because we won't be taking our iPhone X's or our Ferraris or our nice new houses with us when we die. But the poor WILL be with us in heaven, and they will eternally be grateful for what we've done for them.
As Antony tells us in Julius Cesar, the evil that men do lives after them, but the good is often buried with their bones. It's important to remember, though, that our bones will rise again.
God, thank You for teaching us to invest wisely.
