a different kind of kind

Lewis tells us about being kind today in A Year wtih C.S. Lewis.

He says that being kind is more than just feeling happy. But he doesn't tell us much more than that today.

What he doesn't tell us is how to be kind. (Not that he has to... but that's where I'm going with my blog). So how DO we act in kindness?

Well, the pic above gives a good clue. Just smiling at someone is an act of kindness. Saying thank you is kindness. Being nice to someone who is having a bad day - that's kindness.

There are many stories about people who are suicidal having their whole lives changed by the simple kindness of another person. And it's so simple to do. Telling someone they look nice today. Opening the door for someone. Giving a homeless person a dollar. Sometimes most difficult, but most effective: being nice to your family. When your sister is annoying you, or mom wants you to take out the trash... rather than doing it with a complaint, do it happily. That's kindness. It goes a long way in a family.

God, please help us to be kind.
