play is serious business

Lewis says three important words today in A Year with C.S. Lewis.

He says "We must play." And he's absolutely right. Play is an incredibly important part of our lives, and probably the one that gets the most neglected in most adult's lives today.

Play is the interplay between creativity, exercise, thought, and imagination. God "played" when He created the world. He "plays" in our lives every day, as He creates new wonders to amaze us.

And He wants us to be "sub-creators", as Tolkien put it. He wants us to use the gifts He's given us to make the world a better, more wonderful place. He has given each of us creative abilities. You may know what they are. Or you may need to explore to find out. If so, just ask. He'll be more than happy to show you.

Not only is play not just for kids, but it's something all of us adults should be engaging in as often as we can. It's high and holy work - and it's also fun. Not often that we think of things as being high, serious, holy, and fun all at the same time. But the gift of play is just that.

God, help us play.
