Since I'm Catholic, I don't assume that I'll be in heaven. So for the remainder of this blog post, every time I say "we" it's with the hope that I will be joining the blessed in heaven. I do have hope, and good reason to believe that I will be in heaven one day. But I don't take it for granted.
Lewis points to our eternal selves. And it's interesting to think about, I think. Of course, about the only thing we have to go on is what Jesus was like after He came back to life. But that does give us several things to think about.
He ate food. I'm pretty sure He didn't NEED to eat. But He COULD eat and drink. So I think it's safe to think that we will eat and drink in heaven, but that we won't need to, since that would mean that we could die if we didn't, which won't be possible.
He also seemed to appear wherever He wanted, like in the locked room with the disciples, without opening doors. It seems like He could either levitate or fly, since He ascended. These all point to things that perhaps we'll be able to do.
But one of the biggest things I like to realize is that He had a physical body, and that His friends could recognize Him. Yes, He looked sufficiently different that it took them a minute to realize it was Him. But they DID recognize Him eventually. So, we can safely assume, I think, that we will have physical bodies which our friends and family will be able to recognize. That's kind of reassuring, isn't it?
In any case, Lewis really nails it when he says that no matter what it's like, it will be better than our lives are here. The Bible tells us that our grief here will seem like nothing compared to the joy that we'll have at that time.
Even so, come quickly, Lord Jesus.
