growing pains

Lewis tells us about growing wings today in A Year with C.S. Lewis.

He says that when we start following Jesus, we can be compared to a horse that, rather than being taught to jump higher and higher, is rather given wings so it can fly. But when it first starts growing those wings, it might look awkward.

This relates, I think, to the life of Jesus. We know very little about His "hidden years", from the time He was a child until the age of 30, when He began His ministry. And the things that He did and learned might have been a little awkward.

In most of the lives of the saints, you find this awkward stage. You find people doing something new, and as you probably know, when you do something new, it looks odd at first.

So give yourself some freedom. Allow yourself to be odd. To be awkward. Because God is growing  you into someone new... and there will be some growing pains.

Thanks, God, for making us new all the time.

So true. In my later years I'm less likely to try something new. But as I reflect on earlier yesrs, I don't know how I survived by trying new things. What I have come to realize is that God had plans for me to do His will and He won't let you or me die as long as you're either doing His will or searching forit. He does let us try things new and take the bumps along the way, But as I now recall, He was always there.
