the enemy

Today, Lewis talks about our ancient enemy in A Year with C.S. Lewis.

He tells us the truth - that Satan is real. Whether he has horns and hooves is not the point (so to speak). The important thing is that he is real, and he wants to destroy us.

We have this on the highest authority. Jesus Himself said that the enemy comes to steal, kill, and destroy. And immediately He gives us the answer to the question - He has come that we may have abundant life. He is the answer to the question of our enemy.

Harkening back to yesterday's blog, we realize that fear is what the enemy wants us to feel. He does his best to scare us, daily, into shrinking back from the lives that God wants us to live. He tries (usually successfully) to frighten us into drawing back our hand from helping our fellow man. He does everything he can to fill us with fear ... so that we will not love.

But love, fear's antithesis, conquers all. Love drives out fear. Love drives out the enemy. The best thing we can do in regard to Satan... is to focus on love instead. Love God with all of our hearts, minds, souls, and with all of our strength... and love other people the way we love ourselves - unconditionally. That is the answer to the devil. With His love in our hearts - the devil must flee.

Thank You, God, for giving us the answer to our ancient foe - that answer being YOU.
