eye of a needle

Lewis gets to the point today in A Year with C.S. Lewis.

He tells us that the point of humility, in essence, has little to do with us. It has to do with our relationship with Him. Lewis brings to mind the verse where Jesus says it's easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than it is for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.

Why would it be so hard for rich people to enter His kingdom? Could it be...oh, I don't know...Pride?
One explanation of Jesus's statement is that there is, according to some, a gate leading into Jerusalem called "The Eye of the Needle". It is a very low gate, and the only way a camel could go through it would be by kneeling. Maybe that's what Jesus meant.

Or maybe He just meant it's impossible, by any human means. But, He adds, nothing is impossible with God.

So all of this goes together to say that humility is important because it allows us to come to God, humbly, like little children. Realizing that we don't deserve it. Aware of our weakness. Full of grateful love.

That's the way we come to Him.

Thank You for receiving us like little children, since that's truly the only way we can come to You.
