a name that only He understands

Today's readings: Zechariah 12:1-13:9, Revelation 19:1-21, Psalm 147:1-20, Proverbs 31:1-7

There is something profound and difficult to fathom in today's reading. John in the book of Revelation tells us that Jesus has a name written on Him that no one understands except Himself.

This raises lots of questions... it even cuts to the heart of what language means. Don't words exist so that we can communicate things to each other? What good is a word that only one person understands? And if it is written on Him, who wrote it? The only logical answer is that He wrote it on Himself... since He's the only person who understands it.

But... I don't know about you, but this "word that no one understands" makes my brain itch. I sense that there is a deeper meaning down under this somewhere. There is profound truth here. Jesus's name that only He understands tells us something. Otherwise John would not have put it in Revelation. So what does it mean?

I'll be pondering this for awhile. That's what's cool about true and real things... there are meanings that aren't easy and tidy and simple. They are deep and profound. Proverbs says it is the glory of God to conceal a matter, and the glory of kings to find them out. I'm no king, but I do appreciate the glory and wonder that God has so creatively woven into our existence with such care and great detail. He is truly a master creator.

Thank You, God, for giving us things to ponder.
