what to do with wealth

Today's readings: Isaiah 28:14-30:11, Gal 3:23-4:31, Psalm 62:1-12, Prov 23:19-21

Our view of wealth shifted greatly from the OT to the NT.

We used to see wealth as evidence of God's blessings. In the OT, Job, Solomon, Abraham, and many others were seen as being godly men because they had many possessions.

In the NT, we are reminded of the rich young ruler, who did not choose to sell all he had and give the money to the poor, and then come follow Jesus, because he was very rich. A careful reading of the passage shows that the rich young ruler did not choose his wealth over salvation... when he asked Jesus what to do have eternal life, Jesus told him to keep the commandments. Then he offered him what to do "to be perfect"... and that's when the young man chose poorly.

Jesus then tells his disciples that it is difficult for the rich to enter the Kingdom. But He assures us that "nothing is impossible with God."

So what are we to make of this? Well, our verse in Psalms tells us today, very simply. "If your wealth increases, don't make it the center of your life." In other words, keep money in its place. Don't make it the most important thing in your life. If more money means sacrificing time with your family, or time with God... make the right choice. Not because you'll be "sinning" if you don't. Not because it's EVIL like the fruits of the devil.... just because it makes your life happier and healthier if you do.

That's why God tells us to do things... not to keep us from joy. To lead us to it.

Thanks, God, for giving us wealth and for teaching us what to do with it.

My favorite verse was,"keep your heart on the right course."
