powerful tenderness

Today's readings: Isaiah 39:1-41:16, Ephesians 1:1-23, Psalm 66:1-20, Proverbs 23:25-28

We gain an amazing glimpse into the heart of God in today's reading.

In Isaiah, we read that God is powerful beyond our understanding. Nations are less than nothing to Him, it says. He holds the oceans in His hands.

Yet.

Look at the tenderness in the verse, "He will carry the lambs in His arms, holding them close to His heart." That is a beautiful thing.

Jesus told us straight out that a single sparrow doesn't fall to the earth without God seeing and noticing. Those cute little birds in the picture above are sparrows. God loves them.

And Jesus made it very clear, as well... YOU are worth more than many sparrows. When you've had a bad day, and your prayer was basically just yelling at God for awhile... He hears you, He loves you, it matters to Him.

Stop and think about that. The God who created the entire universe hears you when you've had a bad day. He cares. He listens. If that doesn't bring you to your knees, I don't know what will.

Towards the end of the reading in Isaiah, Jacob is called a worm. I've never liked so called "worm theology"... but that's because, until tonight, I always misunderstood it. I always thought it was an insult to be called a worm. But put it in context here. A worm is a tiny little creature, totally incapable of ... pretty much anything, really. But it is beloved of God. It is a creature... intricately crafted by God. When God calls Jacob a worm, he isn't insulting Jacob. He's telling him that even though he's utterly incapable of... pretty much anything, God loves him, cherishes him, and will take care of him.

The powerful tenderness of God. I stand in awe.

Thank You, God, for your tenderness, and for the worm that You care about in your mysterious love.

His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me.

To help some to understand the worm name calling, I prefer rolley-polley still a worm but kinda cute. Gods love for us can somewhat be seen in the love that history has shown us at trials of truly horrible people and yet seated in the court room is their mother. (Sometimes their father also) the pain and silent anguish they experience hearing what their precious child has done. How much greater must Gods pain and anguish do we inflict towards him everyday with Him seeing and knowing all that we do. We need to focus on what is right and just....He has placed it in our hearts.
