we might consider that...

Today's readings: Job 37:1-39:30, 2 Cor 4:13-5:10, Psalm 44:9-26, Prov 22:13

We've got a recurring theme again today. It's about what our focus in life should be. And the picture above is a clue.

In Job, God points out that Job has been focusing on himself and his woes. And to be fair, it's hard not to when all your children die, you lose all your wealth, and you get boils all over your body. But God reminds Job what's most important. And it's not Job.

We see the theme again in 2 Corinthians, when Paul points out in verse 15 that "All of this is for your benefit... and God will receive more and more glory."

Job's friends got the argument focused on A or B... the same A and the same B that they asked Jesus, when they wanted to know if "this man or his parents sinned" so that he was blind. Jesus said "it's not A or B... the answer is above A and B. It's bigger than A OR B. It's so that God will be glorified."

And that's the answer in Job today... God shows that He is the one to be glorified. And in Paul, he says that same thing.

So how do we glorify God? Apparently that's the answer... but how do you do it? Well, there are many ways, but one of them is found back in 2 Corinthians 4:15 "All of this is for your benefit..." We love God (and glorify Him) by loving and helping other people.

There is our focus. It's not all about me. I'm not first. We know this intrinsically... the most boring person at a party is the guy who talks about himself all of the time. I'm not even second, contrary to a popular message going around some churches these days. :) Because if I'm second, that means God is first... but everyone else is after me. I'm not last either. I'm not in the question. It's not about me.

It's about other people. It's about God. When I start focusing on them, my life suddenly makes sense. Life is interesting, not boring. Everything is an adventure, and life is fun. If I make it all about me, it gets old and tired and boring really fast. But when it's about others, and about God, it stays fresh and new every morning.

Thank You, God, for helping us clearly see what's most important.

You said it all today. I fed the homeless again last night and it always brings me back to the importance of others before myself. Precious little faces with no where to live and they are so grateful.....good for my soul

I am reminded of this as I teach every day and care for my own children.
