</div><div><br></div><div>Today in the One Year Bible we read from Mark 7:1-23. Jesus explains to the religious leaders and His disciples that food doesn't defile you so it's not a sin to eat certain foods.</div><div><br></div><div>How does that jive with the Christian tradition of fasting from meat on Fridays? Well, we don't fast because the food is unclean and will defile us. We fast because we're depriving ourselves of something good, i. e. tasty food, to focus on something better: Jesus and His love which gave us His sacrifice on the cross (on Friday). Then when Friday is over, we go back to eating meat again because it's not evil (unless it's overdone).</div><div><br></div><div>God, thank You for teaching us the reasons behind Your commands. </div>jefehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03553871044930606714noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4826393377124891690.post-22750149004585337582024-02-23T15:52:00.001-08:002024-02-23T15:55:50.796-08:00difficult on purpose <div>

</div><div><br></div><div>Today in the One Year Bible we read from Mark 1:1-20. Jesus calls James and John, who leave their father in the boat and follow Him.</div><div><br></div><div>At first glance, this seems hard on their father. And it was! Like Jesus will later say, unless we "hate" our mother and father and brothers and sisters, we can't be His disciples. "Hate" here is a comparison term. It doesn't mean to loathe them or treat them unkindly. It doesn't mean to disrespect or dishonor them. It means that compared to our love for Jesus, our attitude towards our family seems like hate. In other words, when you make a big decision, you're loving the one you choose and hating the one you don't. That's how the disciples acted regarding Jesus and their father. </div><div><br></div><div>But think about what they left... and what they chose. They did leave everything they knew, and their probably happy life working on the family trade as fishermen. But what they gained was eternal life and a place in the kingdom of God right next to Jesus. </div><div><br></div><div>Today in the One Year Bible we read from Matthew 28:1-20. Jesus is telling His disciples to go make disciples, baptizing them in the trinitarian formula. And then He tells us what that means. He says, "teach these new disciples to obey all the commandments I've given you."</div><div><br></div><div>That's what is meant when the church says to make disciples. Not just have them pray a prayer and call Jesus lord and "believe in Him." But instead they are to do what He said to do!</div><div><br></div><div>Same thing today, in that we do what He says to do. </div><br></div><div>Today in the One Year Bible we read from Matthew 27:32-66. We read an account of the crucifixion. And it's interesting that it doesn't EXACTLY agree with the other accounts in the gospels. Matthew's account says Jesus cried out just before He died, but doesn't tell us what He said. Then it says that both thieves ridiculed Him, rather than just one like the other accounts tell us.</div><div><br></div><div>This is interesting because it's what you'd expect when several people tell you a story of something they saw. "He shouted, but I didn't hear what He said. Oh yeah, that's right. And then the thieves made fun of Him... wait, you say just one did? That's right! I forgot about that..." Some people see these differences as proof that the gospel accounts aren't true, but the overall agreement with occasional differences is exactly what you'd expect from true accounts from various sources.</div><div><br></div><div>What does that have to do with us today? Share YOUR story of what God has done for you. Don't feel that your story needs to be exactly like what another person says about their relationship with God. Be genuine and share your experiences, and God will speak through you and help people find Him. </div><div><br></div><div>God, thanks for giving us our own experience of You. He says that if we have fed the hungry, clothed the naked, visited the sick and those in prison... we've done these things to Him, which makes us sheep, and we go to heaven. If we have NOT done these things, we have neglected Him, which makes us goats, and we go to eternal punishment.</div><div><br></div><div>If you, like me, find yourself not doing these things... we better get busy doing them. </div><div><br></div><div>Today in the One Year Bible we read from Matthew 25:1-30. Jesus teaches us a very sobering lesson. A man gives his servants some money. One uses it and earns more for his master. The second got less, but he too uses it to earn more for his master. Both are rewarded. The third man buried the money so he wouldn't lose it, and gives it back to his master unused. The master is not happy. He takes the money from the man and gives it to the first man with lots of money. Then he has the last man thrown out into the darkness where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth.</div><div><br></div><div>In the story, the money is called "talents", and while this is a coincidence, it has a deep meaning. Because God has given us talents... gifts... and He expects us to use them. What are your gifts? Are you using them? If you don't know what they are, ask people what you are good at. They will usually tell you your gifts. Also ask God to show you your gifts. Then put them to work for Him.</div><div><br></div><div>You'll be delighted when you do! </div><div><br></div><div>Today in the One Year Bible we read from Matthew 23:13-39. Jesus is very straightforward and blunt with the religious leaders of His time. He says they lay heavy burdens on the people but don't lift a finger to help them.</div><div><br></div><div>Today on the internet, we find it very easy to do the same thing. To drop truth bombs on people, which might be 100% true, and then walk away and let them flounder in it. When we share the truth with people, either in person or online, we should be prepared to help and pray for the person. We should WANT them to accept the truth and be transformed. In a word, we should love them. That's the factor that Jesus was finding lacking in the religious leaders. They declared the law at people, but didn't love them or want them to be transformed by the truth.</div><div><br></div><div>Let's commit to loving the people with whom we share the truth. </div><div><br></div><div>God, thanks for teaching us (very clearly!) to love people and not just drop truth bombs. </div>jefehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03553871044930606714noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4826393377124891690.post-67269437745814985862024-02-03T14:21:00.001-08:002024-02-03T14:30:29.249-08:00do as they say <div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</div><br></div><div><br></div><div>Today in the One Year Bible we read from Matthew 22:24-23:12. Jesus tells us that we should do what the religious leaders say, but don't follow their example. Seems strange, right? Why do what they say when they're giving us a bad example? </div><div><br></div><div>Well, the same instruction goes today. We have religious leaders (out of charity I won't name them) who don't live godly lives, but they DO share the truth in their teachings. So many people stop going to church because they don't like the preacher or the teacher at that church. Don't let the actions of a bad teacher keep you from God! Listen to the truth, even if it comes from someone who doesn't seem to get it.</div><div><br></div><div>God, thanks for giving us the truth, even if it comes through bad examples. </div>jefehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03553871044930606714noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4826393377124891690.post-22993872837517801032024-02-02T15:27:00.001-08:002024-02-03T14:28:50.663-08:00trying to outsmart God <div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</div><br></div><br></div><div><br></div><div>Today in the One Year Bible we read from Matthew 22:1-33. Jesus teaches His listeners, and us, several things in response to people who were trying to trap Him by outsmarting Him. They didn't realize they were arguing with God.</div><div><br></div><div>This seems silly, but we try to do the same thing today. When God doesn't seem to want to give us something, we try to coax Him into it. We even use reverse psychology and pretend we DON'T want it so He'll give it to us. Of course, none of these things work because He's so much smarter than we are that we can't even begin to understand how much smarter He is. </div><div><br></div><div>So instead, let's trust Him to know what's best for us and follow His plan for our lives. </div><div><br></div><div>God, thank You for being so much smarter than we are. Help us trust Your plan. </div>jefehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03553871044930606714noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4826393377124891690.post-437506446016651082024-02-01T14:29:00.001-08:002024-02-01T14:33:27.397-08:00actually doing what He says <div>

</div><div><br></div><div>Today in the One Year Bible we read from Matthew 21:23-46. Jesus tells a story of two brothers. One says he won't do his father's command, but then he does. The other says he will, but doesn't do it.</div><div><br></div><div>Simple lesson, right? But I find myself being the second brother so many times. I acknowledge that what God is telling us should be done. I pray "Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven." But then when it comes to actual decision making in my life, I don't do much feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, visiting the sick... I do way too much feeding myself and buying too many clothes and playing games instead of visiting those who feel alone. </div><div><br></div><div>Let's do better. Let's tell Him yes... and then actually do it. </div><div><br></div><div>God, thank You for being patient with us when we say one thing and do another. Help us do Your will. </div>jefehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03553871044930606714noreply@blogger.com0
